Papers of James V. Gallagher, 1964-1984.

The papers of James V. Gallagher document his legislative career in the Iowa house and senate with subject files and correspondence. The subject folders include topics ranging from apportionment to conservation and abortion to busing. Energy and conservation are the two major subject catagories of the collection. Gallagher's work on the Energy Committee is represented with minutes, reports, and correspondence. His long time involvement with the Iowa Energy Policy Council is also recorded in some detail. Gallagher was concerned about many conservation issues from air and water pollution to land use and natural resources. The Conservation Education Center, the bottle bill, bicycle trails, and the coal project are all discussed in the papers. Correspondence is found throughout the collection and there are letters from: Dick Clark, John Culver, Charles Grassley, Tom Harkin, Harold Hughes, James Leach, Edward Mezvinsky, Arthur Neu, Robert Ray, Neal Smith, and Lewis Warren.
